Day 46 of the hike was a day of slow and steady progress, with a focus on taking care of my right ankle and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. After a leisurely morning at the hostel, I headed out to tackle the day's hike, mindful of my ankle's condition. The trail began with a short walk along a hillside, leading to a busy bridge with a pedestrian walkway, which I used to cross safely. The path then took me through a short road walk before I re-entered the woods, where I had a mild climb up along the river.
One of the most fascinating aspects of hiking is the sense of community that develops along the trail. I was amazed at how many hikers I encountered who shared connections and stories, even if we hadn't met before. It's like a giant game of telephone, with word of mouth spreading up and down the trail, connecting different 'hiker bubbles'. This network is vast and fascinating, and it's one of the things that makes the experience so unique.
As I continued on the trail, I couldn't help but notice the stunning views. The Rice Field Shelter, situated on top of a ridge, offered one of the best views of any shelter thus far. The expansive views of the surrounding valleys were truly spectacular, and it was a place I could have easily stopped to enjoy the scenery.
However, I was determined to make some progress, so I continued on. The trail then took me through a series of switchbacks, which proved to be a good way to maintain a moderate pace without aggravating my ankle. As the sun began to set, I could feel the temperature dropping quickly, and I knew that tonight would be a colder one, with temperatures dropping into the 30s.
Despite the cold, I was determined to keep going. I carried on into the dark, using my headlamp to navigate the last mile or so. The trail then led me to Wills Field, where I was able to set up a tent for the night. It was nearly 10pm by the time I crawled into my tent, and I was exhausted from the day's hike.
Overall, Day 46 was a day of slow and steady progress, with a focus on taking care of my ankle and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The trail offered stunning views and a sense of community that made the experience truly special. As I continue on the hike, I'm eager to see what other surprises and challenges the trail has in store for me.
